(Karina Sun)

(Karina Sun)

I am an outgoing person who has an endless curiosity. I love to explore the world and understand the society we are living in. Therefore, I am always passionate in trying all kinds of outdoor activities and sports. And I have found traveling and indulging in nature one of the greatest pleasures of life. In addition, I am also interested in geography and international politics, since I regard them as the best access to get "connected" with the world we are living in. To practice this ideal, I have tried as hard as I can to participate in any international events. I was in my school's voluntary program, doing a one-month service and learning project in Ghana. I voluntarily be the leader of our team, since I thought it would be an excellent experience to "learn by doing." And it eventually turned out to be a very rewarding and brilliant experience. This 2010's project was awarded by National Youth Committee (NYC) as "Outstanding Project at Youth's International Participants and Engagements." No doubt, this experience had broadened my horizon and granted me the key to the international society.
Due to the Ghana project, I was informed and recommended through NYC to participate in "2010 國際事務青年人才培訓計." This program offered scholarship for me to study the summer session related to International Relations at the world's prestigious university-- University of California, at Berkeley. Also under the obligations, I am required to be a short intern at our embassy in San Francisco, California. All these special and significant experiences I had been through in the US enlightened me. Since then, I have realized that the most fundamental idea of diplomacy is always about "human interactions / relations." Especially in terms of our country's complicated situation in the current international society, the expression and presentation of Taiwan's soft powers has become an essence. Under our society's expectations, we who are the so-called "intellectuals / youths" have to take on the responsibility to do something for our society. Therefore, in order to present the thorough aspect of our nation, it is important to seek an approach to blend our personal charisma, specialties and characteristics with Taiwanese traits. In short, every young intellectual has the responsibility to introduce our society to the mainstream international world. In my opinion, demonstrating Taiwan's soft powers via interactions with people from the world is the simplest one.
Based on this idea, I pushed myself to be as social as I could to meet people from the world at UC Berkeley's International House. I discoursed with other residents, talking about current events and cultural differences in our country respectively. I have known and made friends from America, Ukraine, Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, South Korea and Japan. The world was epitomized through our interactions, and I realized that cultural differences could be torn down through communication.

3. My Hometown。

I have found it difficult to explain in a few words whenever people asking about my hometown. I was born in Taiwan, undoubtedly. But my family immigrated inland from town to town due to work. To trace back to my origin, I was born in Taichung City, the metropolis of Central Taiwan. I have lived there till my late teen. And then, my parents started a new business in the mountainous scenic area of Nantou County, the inner Central of Taiwan. Since then, I have lived in the outland of the society. A place that is surrounded by magnificent mountains. I have cultivated my sense of appreciating the nature, and gradually realized that the true beauty of Taiwan is the nature, ie. the mountains. However, my permanent residence is registered under my grandparents, who live in a tiny offshore island of Kaohsiung City. The island's fishing culture / atmosphere and the close relations with the nature have also inspired me. In other words, I reckon myself as an authentic Taiwanese who has abundant experiences of "living" in Taiwan. I reckon my hometown as Taiwan as a whole.
To many foreign tourists, Taipei might be their top choice to experience the Taiwanese spirit of hustle city life. But I say, relaxing in the nature and experiencing it through various outdoor activities are the jewel of Taiwan. Being a native dweller of Taiwan, it is pretty obvious that we have very abundant natural resources. Magnificent mountains and boundless seashores have always been tourists attractions. The various geographic environment has given birth to incredible wild lives. Animals, plants, and other geographic and biologic specialties are Taiwan's preciousness. Outdoor activities such as hiking in National Parks' tracks, camping in the ancient forests while listening and understanding the wisdom of aboriginal culture, scuba diving and snorkeling under the sea while admiring the colorful tropical coral forests, are all must-dos not only for visitors, but for every Taiwanese. And that is my hometown-- Taiwan. An island blessed by Nature and full of adventurous natural attractions.
