(Jade Chang)

My hometown is located in the central Taiwan, the lovely Taichung and the heart of Taiwan. Taichung has developed its own unique style that has big difference from other cities in Taiwan. Taichung is a city of elegance. We have all kinds of exhibition and art activities all the year round. Taichung is a city of delicacy. It is a perfect place for you to dine. We have wide range and various kind of food. If you want to enjoy the exotic cuisine, we have a bunch of well-decorated restaurants with the best chefs from all over the world. If you want to try some traditional Taiwanese snacks, Taichung is a place you must visit. We bring in different specialties from over the country and here we make it even better and the price is still reasonable.
Taichung is also a city of vitality. People who live here lead an energetic but steady life. Taichung is my hometown and I hope this lovely place will get better and better.

I am an outgoing person who has an endless curiosity. I love to explore the world and understand the society we are living in. Therefore, I am always passionate in trying all kinds of outdoor activities and sports. And I have found traveling and indulging in nature one of the greatest pleasures of life. In addition, I am also interested in geography and international politics, since I regard them as the best access to get "connected" with the world we are living in. To practice this ideal, I have tried as hard as I can to participate in any international events. I was in my school's voluntary program, doing a one-month service and learning project in Ghana. I voluntarily be the leader of our team, since I thought it would be an excellent experience to "learn by doing." And it eventually turned out to be a very rewarding and brilliant experience. This 2010's project was awarded by National Youth Committee (NYC) as "Outstanding Project at Youth's International Participants and Engagements." No doubt, this experience had broadened my horizon and granted me the key to the international society.
Due to the Ghana project, I was informed and recommended through NYC to participate in "2010 國際事務青年人才培訓計." This program offered scholarship for me to study the summer session related to International Relations at the world's prestigious university-- University of California, at Berkeley. Also under the obligations, I am required to be a short intern at our embassy in San Francisco, California. All these special and significant experiences I had been through in the US enlightened me. Since then, I have realized that the most fundamental idea of diplomacy is always about "human interactions / relations." Especially in terms of our country's complicated situation in the current international society, the expression and presentation of Taiwan's soft powers has become an essence. Under our society's expectations, we who are the so-called "intellectuals / youths" have to take on the responsibility to do something for our society. Therefore, in order to present the thorough aspect of our nation, it is important to seek an approach to blend our personal charisma, specialties and characteristics with Taiwanese traits. In short, every young intellectual has the responsibility to introduce our society to the mainstream international world. In my opinion, demonstrating Taiwan's soft powers via interactions with people from the world is the simplest one.
Based on this idea, I pushed myself to be as social as I could to meet people from the world at UC Berkeley's International House. I discoursed with other residents, talking about current events and cultural differences in our country respectively. I have known and made friends from America, Ukraine, Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, South Korea and Japan. The world was epitomized through our interactions, and I realized that cultural differences could be torn down through communication.

I have found it difficult to explain in a few words whenever people asking about my hometown. I was born in Taiwan, undoubtedly. But my family immigrated inland from town to town due to work. To trace back to my origin, I was born in Taichung City, the metropolis of Central Taiwan. I have lived there till my late teen. And then, my parents started a new business in the mountainous scenic area of Nantou County, the inner Central of Taiwan. Since then, I have lived in the outland of the society. A place that is surrounded by magnificent mountains. I have cultivated my sense of appreciating the nature, and gradually realized that the true beauty of Taiwan is the nature, ie. the mountains. However, my permanent residence is registered under my grandparents, who live in a tiny offshore island of Kaohsiung City. The island's fishing culture / atmosphere and the close relations with the nature have also inspired me. In other words, I reckon myself as an authentic Taiwanese who has abundant experiences of "living" in Taiwan. I reckon my hometown as Taiwan as a whole.
To many foreign tourists, Taipei might be their top choice to experience the Taiwanese spirit of hustle city life. But I say, relaxing in the nature and experiencing it through various outdoor activities are the jewel of Taiwan. Being a native dweller of Taiwan, it is pretty obvious that we have very abundant natural resources. Magnificent mountains and boundless seashores have always been tourists attractions. The various geographic environment has given birth to incredible wild lives. Animals, plants, and other geographic and biologic specialties are Taiwan's preciousness. Outdoor activities such as hiking in National Parks' tracks, camping in the ancient forests while listening and understanding the wisdom of aboriginal culture, scuba diving and snorkeling under the sea while admiring the colorful tropical coral forests, are all must-dos not only for visitors, but for every Taiwanese. And that is my hometown-- Taiwan. An island blessed by Nature and full of adventurous natural attractions.

My name is Carol. There are three children in my family, and I am the oldest one. In the process of taking care of my siblings, I learned to be responsible and considerate. Thanks for the free and respectful way of education from my parents, I am encouraged to make my own decisions and discover my interests. In my junior-high year, I had a chance to study abroad for two months. It was the first time that I left home, met different peoples, tasted exotic food, and learned a foreign style of life. This experience really impressed me, and even encouraged me to study hard to be good at English. That is, a short cut to explore the world. Last year, I took part in the summer support plan in Nepal as an international volunteer. Similarly, I have been far away home for 49 days this time. My team members and I worked together in free medical care and medical camps to achieve the goal of giving hygienic education in Nepalese villages. I played the role of supervisor of the camps and the coordinator between the leader and other members. Contrary to my first time in the foreign country, I experienced a totally different life here. Honestly, I was shocked by the lack of medical resources, shortage of power, and the poor lives led by the local people. Although they were in the poor conditions, they were kind to share with their pure and passionate heart. At that moment, I realized that to give is not to lose. Nevertheless, it brings me more love and happiness. In fact, to give is to gain. To sum up, I am enthusiastic in learning new culture, sharing new thinking, helping those who are in need, and adapt myself to new environment efficiently. I expect myself to broaden my horizon through the exploration of other countries. Meanwhile, to know my lovely hometown more in order to share the good of it to other people.

Formosa, as it was labeled. My hometown is an island, surrounded by ocean, penetrated by hills and mountains, and full of beautiful scenery. In addition to its amazing nature, it has abundant history, inherits traditional Chinese culture, welcomes diverse ethnic groups, and respects different religions. Taiwan, as it is commonly called. People here are nice and passionate. Especially the food here has various origins and challenges your sense of taste. Moreover, the outstanding development in democracy and economics makes it a modern and convenient country. R.O.C, as it is titled. With more open information supplied, to discover it becomes easier and more interesting. Here is the place where I was born, live, love, and eager to share more about it with you.

I am Tzeng Rong-Yu. I grew up in a warm and big family. My family brings me characters of outgoing, considerate and optimistic and I concern other people’s feelings and always bring energy to my friends and people around me. In my childhood, my mother encouraged me to participate in many kinds of summer camps for arts and learned ballet and playing piano. These experiences have profound influence on me in my life though I didn’t choose them to be my major in the college. In the college, I realized that knowledge of academic courses may not be the only thing a student should concern but also real experiences. Therefore, I took on public relations of Economics Organization. As public relations. During the period of being public relations, I learned how to cooperate with others and behave properly in public. And also, I met many good friends. What I have learned is how important it is to have good relationship with the people around me and think more before a project and be optimistic.
When I was in junior year in Tsing-Hua University, I got a chance to arrange an exhibition called “ Be Yourself“ with other six students from Physics, Material Sciences and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences and other departments in Tsing-Hua university during 2010 and 2011. Not only the people were from different departments but also the works were totally different from each other. However, when they got together , they fit each other amazingly. This was my first time to plan an exhibition even though it was just a very small one. I love painting since I was a child but I’ve never dreamed of having a exhibition in my life and we did it eventually! Until now, I still feel grateful to have these friends to complete my dream.

Nantou is my hometown. This beautiful place is located in the centre of Taiwan and it is the only landlocked county among 14 counties in Taiwan. Even though you cannot see the beauty of the ocean or the prosperity in the cities, you can still enjoy the scenery of the tallest mountain, Mount Jude and the tranquil of countryside in Nantou. Otherwise, my uncle has a orchard in Chingjin, Nantou. When I was a child, my father took me there to spend our holidays or help my uncle with his orchard. We embrace the wide and blue sky and inhale the fresh air in the mountains.
Until I studied in Taichung Girls Senior High School, I began to realize the difference between city and country, especially, the resources of information and knowledge for many fields like arts, science or social science. However, I still appreciate that I can grew up and live in such a beautiful countryside with many natural treasures. Every time, I felt depressed, I will think of my peaceful and lovely hometown and recharge soon.

In the past one year, I pour my effort out in pop dance club almost everyday. Because I stand at an important position in this club, the one to teach others dancing.
In my opinion, If I decide to do a thing, I will struggle all my efforts on it, if I don’t do it well, I will rather not doing it.
I remember the first time to teach others, I get nervous but I still tell myself to stay calm. Every time when someone asks me some questions that I can’t answer, I will try to figure out. Is his body control not good enough or is my explanation not clear? Every people has their obstacle in certain part of body, but my work is trying to help them find it out. Just like there are different case of troubles, but I can’t give up to teach them, because I know through this process, I will progress too, just like the difficulties in life.

I remembered when I was 14, I went to Canberra, in Australia, to studied for two months. At there, a Korean told me,” You come from Taiwan? But Taiwan is not a country, right?” At that time, I immediately understand what my hometown looks like in other’s eyes.
Taiwan is really a beautiful island, the most marvelous thing is not the scenes or the food, I think is the people live in here. When I meet foreigners I will tell them if you have any difficult finding roads, the passengers will definitely give you a hand. I remembered when I studied in Mcdonalds, a Danish came to chat with me for almost one hour. He asked me the people in China and in Taiwan are different or not. Then, I answered,”
Of course we are different! We are more lovely!”.
Then, Taiwan is a free country unlike other country in this world. We can talk whatever we like to say, we can choose what to read. This is free and a place retain traditional Chinese culture, progress and knowledge spread in every place without restrain. Besides, we have museum to maintain the tradition of history. I really hope Taiwan can be known to more people around the world.

My name is April Ho, and my friends always call me HOI. I’m 20 years old. I’m in the second grade of Chinese Literature Department. I’m interesting in reading, painting, taking photography, watching movie and exercising. I like to make friends, and believe that people can learn different things from different people you met. I like to laugh and love to discover the little but beautiful things surrounding our daily life.
During past year, I have participated in two camps. Both of them taught me lots of things. One of them is Chinese Literature Camp and another is Freshman Camp, which is planned by our department and ESS department. Chinese Literature Camp threw to all of the senior high school students in Taiwan. In CL camp, I was a leader of a little team, and we had to take care of the students in our team. Maybe it seemed easy, but we act just like a full-time mammy, and was very exhausted. But after the five-day-camp, we all very sad to say good-bye.
And in the CL&ESS Camp, I was in a team which planned the activities, which included shows and games. We also had to be the host of the show. It was very tired but we learned how to say what we want to say in front of the audience. We learned to make them feel happy and sad, by our speak.
Both of the camps taught me how to work with a team, and how to be a good teammate. By communication and working hard, any is possible.

My hometown is the capital of R.O.C., and we always call our country as Taiwan. Taiwan is a small island located in western Pacific, nearby China. Although Taiwan isn’t a big country, but it has lots of resources, and many kinds of creature. That’s why Taiwan also be called “Formosa“.
People live in Taiwan is very friendly and kind, and it will let you feel like home. And Taipei is the most prosperous city, people in Taipei has lots of energy. Taipei city’s public transportation is very convenient as well. I like Taipei because it is somewhere that can be bustling but also can be peaceful, you can find your own place in here.
Hometown is where you feel comfortable. Hometown is where you will never forget. People will always remember where he/she was born, and everyone should try to pay back to your hometown as being grateful to its raise. And it’s time of me to do something for my hometown now.
